New Artist - Sophia Brown

Beautiful, Talented and extremely passionate about music would be the best way to describe the 5' 3" dynamo vocalist Sophia Brown. Her recently released debut album "The Spotlight" is creating rave reviews in the reggae music entertainment arena. Brown has been in the music business for over a decade and is still as persistent now as she once was. "I want to be the first female reggae artiste to win the coveted Grammy Award". Sophia got her introduction to the world of entertainment as a dancer and with her exceptional skills in choreography she created dance moves to songs for Dancehall pioneers Barrington Levy, Little John and Michael Palmer. Her talent as a singer came to the forefront after a progressive relationship with the Jamaica Tourist Board developed into her doing live performances on what was then called the Appleton Estate Tour. Supported by her family and friends, Sophia left her St. Elizabeth home in 1988 to live in St. Catherine a short distance away from the music capital of Kingston Jamaica. Known to be a very realistic person, Brown began to realize that every journey begins with a first step, and for her that momentous first step was taken in 1991 when she recorded her first song. The Outa National produced single "Jig Mi" was a harmonious track that gave Sophia her very first local listenership on radio. Recognition of her vocal abilities soon followed and in no time she was off doing big shows performing on the same stage with top-rated reggae acts such as Shabba Ranks, Lady Patra, Frankie Paul, Richie Stephens and Doug E. Fresh. Her next big show was the international festival Reggae Sunsplash in the city of Montego Bay and with the eyes of the world watching she gave a commanding yet gracefully set. That same year in 1992 a collaboration with the renowned Mad Professor from Europe flung open many doors for the singer and landed her recording projects across the globe starting with the Cayman Islands in 1995 where she voiced for Strawberry Records which later sold out to CMI Records.

Securing a four-year, four-album deal with CMI, Sophia’s accomplishments was soon cut short when the company crashed shortly after. Nonetheless she stayed focused and managed to form an alliance called Music Mecka with Dale Dunkley. This production house was responsible for a host of singles releases during that period, namely "Baby Tonight" and "Give it Up" both of which enjoyed favorable airplay. In the years preceding Sophia took to the road and did several tours in and around the Tri-State area of New York, Arizona and Virginia.

She's been on stage with hip hop greats Snoop Dogg, Lil Kim, and Jah Rule to names a few. Coming back home to Jamaica during summer 2007 Sophia decided to concentrate on recording and from this came her biggest single to date. "Love You Pure" was a tasteful Reggae / R&B track inspired by the everyday problems that affect a typical relationship. "That song came about one day when I was talking to a friend who was going though a few challenges in his personal life. Afterward listening I was inspired to write about what he was going through. It was a beautiful song that in the end captivated allot of hearts especially those of people going through difficult times in their love life and now it's like a Valentine's Day Classic". A video for the single came shortly after and eventually it climbed its way to the number 3 spot on the E STRIP Video Charts. 2008 ended with Brown forging numerous distribution deals from online music retailers such as Rhapsody.com, Apple I Tunes and Sprint Music Downloads.
Her second official single "I'm a Rose" which was produced by Cell Block / Music Mecka took flight as a follow up single to keep fans attentive long enough to complete her debut album. A new year now underway Brown was in February nominated in the "Best New Female Artist" category at the 2009 Excellence In Music & Entertainment Awards. Acknowledging that hard work does pay off Brown is committed to making her album debut special.
The future for Sophia Brown looks bright, she says, "I believe that I can touch the world with my music. I feel strongly as an artist my responsibility is to differentiate fact from fiction and also do my best to bring people together with positive lyrics".

Change Has Come!

Greetings all,

It's amazing how time flies! We at the end of January and so much has happened. We have a new President in the White House...Blessings to President Barack Obama! I made it to the Mall inauguration day, and I'm so glad I did. I planned to watch all the happenings on television. I really wasn't up to brave the crowd and the weather. Let me tell you folks, it was FRIGID that day!

Well my mom called and in a spontaneous move, suggested we head downtown to be part of history. It didn't take much nudging on her part. In fact, I was more than happy to be part of the mix. I received several text messages that morning from friends and family near and especially far. They expressed their sheer excitement and desire to be part of the mix. Well, hey...I was so close to the action, there was nothing that would keep me apart!

It was a beautiful experience. I'm so glad to have seen all the radiant faces, flushed from the cold weather, yet you could see the pride as we all shared a similar sense of euphoria.

We are realistic that indeed one man can't change the world, or can he? If President Barack Obama had the ability to inspire so many across the world, then yes, together WE CAN CHANGE the world.

I encourage you to take a lesson from this amazing man and run with it. We can all can continue to be an inspiration to people in our lives, at the job, in the grocery store. We don't have to be the president to make an impact, do we?

On that note folks, I wish you much health and strength in 2009 and beyond. I wish for you especially a stronger faith in these times. Thanks for reading and remember to stop by Caribbean Vibes Radio often to enjoy our music presentation.

One Love everytime!

Happy New Year!

From the desk of Fiona:

We did it folks!!! We made it through anotheryear...or just about. 2008 has been a rough one for most of us. Ithas been for me no doubt...my son got robbed at gun-point, my car gotbroken into, my house got robbed, my jewelry and laptop gotstolen...okay, I know it's ugly right? It's enough to suck thejoy out of my life, but no way! I'm healthy, my family is doinggreat, CVR is still here...lol.

I'm going through a cleaning phase now ever sincethe robbery. I'm cleaning drawers, cupboards, changing roomsaround...in the process I've found some old pictures, letters, notes,cards...not to mention POETRY. I used to write on EVERTYTHING, oldbills, napkins, you name it, I've found one-liners, paragraphs, manuscripts, letters to my unborn children...lol! I found onepiece I'd like to share: CLICKHERE!Share your thoughts as well...

Here's something else Ifound...it's an old picture of a ship. I took it in Jamaica, Black River, St. Elizabeth to be exact. The interesting thing is,this ship has been wrecked for YEARS...it's been leaning on its' side (theway it appears) for years as well. It's withstood hurricances, storms andyet it remains seemingly steadfast. That's a picture of my life is2008! LOL. I may been leaning a bit, but come STORMS, challenges, stress and strain, I've been able to hold my 'anchor' through GOD. So, with that, I wish you much peace, blessings, hope, happiness, prosperity and may your goals and dreams berealized. It's a BIG order, but we have a BIGGOD who can do it, if it's HIS will for us. Enjoy all your NEW YEARfestivities, and please, if you choose to go out and drink, arrangefor a designated driver in advance.
Be safe and have

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

December in Washington, DC

Brrrrrhhhh....It is quite cold here in Washington, D.C . If as you're reading this, you're one of the lucky ones to skip the extra layers of clothing we have to sport this time of the year, don't you dare complain! Most of us would love to trade some of that heat with you right about now. Thing is, there's just so much happening here in town, so staying home on a brisk night, though tempting, is not an option. Of course the music we provide here at CVR will keep things tropical....:-)
Most parties and events here in town have incorporated the chance for patrons to give back. That's important, not just this season, but all through the year. These are trying times for many folks, so I encourage you to give whenever possible to help make someone else' life a little easier. We can still GIVE and share things more meaningful and have a wonderful Christmas and holiday season.
On that note, have a SUPER week, be SAFE and God bless you.
